Misty and Ryker's First Litter

As you gush over the puppy cuteness, I have to speak to the research and preparation to finally welcome this anticipated litter that is YEARS in the making.

Skipping the early setbacks in our journey transitioning from pet owner to a Registered CKC Breeder. Forget about all the hoops we have jumped through. (don't forget the mistakes we have made) This breeding alone has been a 2 and a half year project!

Finding a quality Male and Female breeding prospect is a challenge all its own. Some established Breeders are elated to pass down their wealth of knowledge and experience, while a greater number of Breeders keep a weary eye on the "New Comers". Fewer still are willing to entrust their hard earned bloodlines as the black cloud of "back yard" and "fad-fashion" breeders casts a dark shadow on the pedigrees of the pure-bred.

Once we managed to get our foot in the door, we hurried up to wait. Puppy Ryker and Puppy Misty needed time to grow and mature to truly ascertain their structural soundness and pass the necessary health testing. Ryker's evaluations came in the show ring and by 2 wonderful breeders who stepped up as Mentors. Ryker had early successes in his show career taking Best Baby Puppy in Group his first time out! Next he completed is Canadian Championship, taking Best of Winners at a Regional and National show for Boston Terriers. A Specialty Judge from the U.S.A also awarded Ryker with an AWARD of MERIT, clinching our hopes for Ryker's stud potential.

Misty was an entirely different venture. A "foundation Bitch" for a breeding program is almost as rare as shooting stars and 4 leaf clovers. Misty came from over seas. Serbia is not automatically recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club, we later learned. So for her to be imported and Registered, Misty had to undergo an evaluation by an approved CKC agent. This included of course being able to provide all the appropriate generational pedigree information. Once she was certified and registered with the CKC, we focused on preparing her also for the Ring.

Trying to learn the ins and outs as an exhibitor/handler has been a more complex learning curve than we initially expected. Misty was far less enthusiastic about showing and we rather overwhelmed, decided to focus our Showing education with Ryker and work with our Mentor(s) to develop a deeper understanding of "Structure and Movement" as we evaluated Misty as she matured.

Then the time came. Misty came into season. Both her and Ryker were in peak condition. All the health testing was completed, we had Mentor(s) in our corner and...I PANICKED! What if we messed up? Now, people of note, knew who we were and it felt like we were being evaluated as to our "fitness" as a Breeder.

The words of Renowned Breeder, Handler, AKC Judge and Author Pat Hastings said "...there is no better way to learn what a breed is all about than to have puppies, watch them grow up, and follow them through their lives."

The "Fabulous 5" were born March 10, 2025 after a rather text book pregnancy. Misty welcomed 3 boys and 2 girls.

The first 2 days Misty wasn't completely sure what to do. She had no desire what so ever to eat their poop, so that meant extra cleaning duties for me. Thankfully by day 3, her Mama instincts kicked in and she kept her babies warm, clean and with full bellies.

Ryker on the other hand wasn't sure what the fuss was all about. He would sniff about the whelping pen, that is until Misty made it abundantly clear that she didn't want anyone near her babies.

The time and training with Misty was rewarded by her trust. She openly welcomed our attention on her and her pups. The focus now was to get through the first 2 weeks, keeping as much quiet and encouragement for Misty as possible. As our Mentor(s) often says "Nature has been doing this a lot longer than us Breeders so, as much as possible watch, learn and don't make it complicated." With their lifetime of experience in breeding and showing Boston Terriers, our Mentor(s) couldn't be more right and it has been a beautiful thing to observe and well worth the long sleepless nights.

At the time of writing this blog, the puppies are now 5 weeks old! In that time they have gone from blind, deaf and helpless to active and curious explorers. Using the Puppy Culture platform, we are well into socialization and habituation. Every day the pups interact with new objects and sounds. Daily handling with low level stress and recovery has begun to shape inquisitive, resilient puppies.

Working with the natural instincts to keep their den/sleeping area clean, the pups have begun the initial steps to house breaking by using the "designated" portion of their pen to toilet fairly reliably. With a mouth full of needle sharp teeth, Misty is nursing less often and the Pups eagerly lap up their puppy mush.

Our own 5 month old puppy Lacey, has become a hit with the babies. Without fear, they run to the gate ready to greet Lacey for a comical rumble and tumble that last all of 5 to 10 mins. Then completely exhausted the pups snuggle into the warmth of their fleece bed (and each other) and nap the afternoon away.

Evenings are family time. My hubby and I play and cuddle with the pups individually while watching some TV. Misty and Scarlet (our Rottweiler Puppy Security) make the rounds, checking to see that we are keeping the pups safe. I continue to believe that there is no greater anti-depressant in the world than having your arms (and lap) loaded up with puppies!

Our puppy families enjoy weekly "Pup-dates" with lots of pictures, videos and developmental progress reports. This week especially, we are seeing individual personalities take shape. Ongoing evaluations of the pups and how they respond to the growing world around them have begun that critical process of matching puppies to the best suited family environments. We are happy to have 5 wonderful families from across Canada that are counting the sleeps until they can bring their puppies home.

With the resounding success of this breeding and the growing interest in our program, we look ahead to the fall and the following year. With careful consideration, Misty and Ryker may very well welcome a second litter...STAY TUNED!

Learn What It Means To Be A Member Of The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC)

The Canadian Kennel Club is incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act to be responsible for the registration, preservation and promotion of all CKC recognized breeds of dogs in Canada.

The Canadian Kennel Club is a national membership organization representing purebred dog activities. The Board of Directors of The Canadian Kennel Club is elected from the membership representing their regional zones and is responsible to that membership.

In order to achieve the goals and objectives of The Canadian Kennel Club, its members agree to adhere to the following principles:

• All members of The Canadian Kennel Club will comply with the By-laws, rules and regulations established by the Board of Directors of The Canadian Kennel Club and the requirements of the Animal Pedigree Act;

• All members of The Canadian Kennel Club will provide their dogs with appropriate housing, food and health care;

• All members of The Canadian Kennel Club will endeavor to enhance the role of the purebred dog in society as an essential member of its communities where it functions as a companion, a guardian, a healer, a hunter, a herder, a teacher and, above all, "man's best friend";

• In order to preserve and enhance each breed's characteristics The Canadian Kennel Club supports and encourages participation in shows, trials and other events. All members, whether they be exhibitors, handlers, judges or assistants will participate in such activities with honesty, fairness and integrity, ever mindful of the practice of "good sportsmanship";

• Except as provided in the By-laws of The Canadian Kennel Club, all members as breeders of purebred dogs, will include in their programs, only Canadian Kennel Club registered (or registrable) stock which will strengthen the genetic pool and, thus, guarantee further progression toward the ideals of the standard, keeping authentic records of their activities.

The Breed Standard According to the CKC/AKC

Boston Terriers are small with an average height of 15 to 17 inches. Typical weight ranges from 12-25lbs and the life expectancy is 11 to 13 years. The Boston’s purpose in life is to love their people, they are excellent with children (children should be supervised around pets) and they enjoy meeting other people and animals. If you are looking for a low maintenance dog, look no further. These dogs have short, smooth coats that shed lightly. Don’t expect your couch to be perfectly hairless though. If you want a bull dog type face without the drooling, the Boston Terrier also shines in that category. Brushing is only needed occasionally, though we recommend doing it often as an excellent bonding opportunity. Nails should be trimmed often. A Dremel is the perfect tool for keeping nails trimmed. These dogs are highly intelligent and are easy to train, so be mindful of some stubborn behaviour. Gentle and consistent structure will ensure that your Boston is always well behaved.

What does the Breed Standard Mean?

This is a description of the ideal dog of each recognized breed. The standard is to serve as an ideal against which dogs are judged at shows, originally laid out by the parent breed club and accepted officially by national and international bodies. (example CKC and AKC)

CKC Breed Standard

The following is the description as laid out in the Canadian Kennel Club’s Official Breed Standards Handbook.

The Boston Terrier is classed within “Group 6 - Non Sporting Dogs”

General Appearance

The general appearance of the Boston Terrier should be that of a lively, highly intelligent, smooth-coated, short-headed, compactly built, short- tailed, well-balanced dog of medium station, of “acceptable colour” and evenly marked with white. The head should indicate a high degree of intelligence and should be in proportion to the size of the dog. The body is rather short and well knit, the limbs strong and neatly turned; tail short; and no feature is so prominent that the dog appears badly proportioned. The dog should convey an impression of determination, strength and activity, with a style of a high order; carriage easy and graceful.

A proportionate combination of “colour” and “ideal markings” is a particularly distinctive feature of a representative specimen, and a dog with a preponderance of white on body, or without the proper proportion of “acceptable colour” and white on head, should possess sufficient merit otherwise to counteract its deficiencies in these respects.

The ideal “Boston Terrier expression” displays “a high degree of intelligence,” and is an important characteristic of the breed.

“Colour and markings” and “expression” should be given particular consideration in determining the relative value of “general appearance” to other points.

Size

Not exceeding 25 lb. (11 kg), divided by classes as follows: lightweight, under 15 lb. (7 kg); middleweight, 15 lb and under 20 lb (7-9 kg); heavyweight, 20 lb. and not exceeding 25 lb. (9-11 kg).

Coat and Colour

Coat short, smooth, bright and fine in texture. Colour Black, Seal, Black Brindle, Brindle, all with white markings.

Head

Skull square, flat on top, free from wrinkles; cheeks flat; brow abrupt, stop well defined. Muzzle short, square, wide and deep, and in proportion to skull; free from wrinkles; shorter in length than in width and depth, not exceeding in length approximately one-third of length of skull; width and depth carried out well to end; the muzzle from stop to end of nose on a line parallel to the top of the skull. Nose black and wide, with well-defined lines between nostrils. Mouth: The jaws are broad and square, with short regular teeth. Bite even or sufficiently undershot to square muzzle. The chops of good depth but not pendulous, completely

covering the teeth when the mouth is closed. Eyes wide apart, large and round, dark in colour, expression alert, but kind and intelligent. The eyes should be set square in the skull, and the outside corners should be on a line with the cheeks as viewed from the front. Ears carried erect, either cropped to conform to the shape of the head, or natural bat, situated as near the corners of skull as possible.

Neck

Of fair length, slightly arched and carrying the head gracefully; setting neatly into shoulder s.

Forequarters

Shoulders sloping. Elbows standing neither in nor out. Forelegs set moderately wide apart and on a line with the point of the shoulders; straight in bone and well muscled; pasterns short and strong.

Body

Deep with good width of chest; back short; ribs deep and well sprung, carried well back to loins; loins short and muscular; rump curving slightly to set-on of tail; flank very slightly cut up. The body should appear short but not chunky.

Hindquarters

Hind legs set true; bent at stifles; short from hocks to feet; hocks turning neither in nor out; thighs strong and well muscled. Feet round, small, and compact and turned neither in nor out; toes well arched.

Tail

Set-on low; short, fine and tapering; straight or screw; devoid of fringe or coarse hair, and not carried above horizontal.

Gait

The gait of the Boston Terrier is that of a sure-footed straight-gaited dog, forelegs and hind legs moving straight ahead in line with perfect rhythm, each step indicating grace with power.

Disqualifications

Any Solid Colour; black and tan; red; mouse colours. All white, absence of white markings. Eyes blue in colour or any trace of blue. Docked tail. Dudley nose.

Welcome to Tux Terriers. A home based breeding and rearing program, for social and healthy Boston Terriers.

We are James and Katrina Godden and like many we have always been dog lovers. We started with rescue dogs and over time our paths came across into the Pure Bred world of Dogs.

This is where our story really begins... with a dog named Roo.

Roo was our very first Boston Terrier. We found her listing on Kijiji (Not Reccomended) and my husband and I traveled together to meet the potential new family member. We will never forget what we saw that day.

The living area was terrible. Most of the dogs did not look well maintained, nails untrimmed, dull coats and the dogs lacked that lively quirkiness that we had read about. The home was over crowded with several breeds of dogs with a mixed chaotic pack of puppies. My heart sank at the deplorable conditions.

We contacted Roo's owner who lived Stateside and had sent Roo up to Canada to be bred by what they thought was a "reputable" breeder.

Roo had recently had a cesarean section to deliver a litter, which is common practice for the Breed. Devastatingly, none of the puppies made it. Roo needed an emergency hysterectomy and almost didn’t make it herself. We were horrified and heartbroken as was the original owner. When my Husband and I made eye contact, we both knew there and then that Roo was coming home with us no matter what!

Once home, we took Roo to our vet. With some antibiotics and lots of love, the Vet assured us that Roo was going to be just fine. And the healing began.

Recovery took time as Roo needed to learn to trust us and overcome what we can only describe as a broken heart. The more love we gave, the more Roo realized she was safe and she began to show us all the things that make a Boston Terrier special.

…AND we were hooked!

A decade passed and other wonderful dogs were a part of our family. Our "human" children now entering adulthood started their own adventures and my husband and I found ourselves now “empty nesters”. This change was tough to get used to and is what sparked my hubby to go out and found us our next Boston Terrier, Zeb.

Zeb renewed our love of Breed and we began learning about the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the breed standard, health testing, and the exciting world of Dog Shows

We sought out a CKC breeder to learn more, starting with what it really meant to become a reputable breeder. We didn’t want anyone to experience what we had years before with Roo. Months later we began working with the CKC Breeder and it turned our world (and our house) upside down. We were determined to fulfill the role of a temperament and health conscious breeder of Boston Terriers.

14 Essential Questions To Ask Your Potential Breeder

1. How long have you been breeding dogs?

The more experience and involvement in breed clubs, shows and competitions, the better.

Beware of breeders who breed dogs of more than one or two breeds.

2. How many litters have you bred?

Experience here is a very good thing too, though more than 4-5 litters per year would be a warning sign.

If they are new to breeding, they should talk about their mentor(s) who have helped them establish a breeding program.

3. Will the puppies be registered with the Canadian American Kennel Club?

This establishes the puppy’s status as a purebred. In Canada puppies are most commonly registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. Other registries also recognized by the Animal Pedigree Act are the Canine Federation of Canada, Canadian Border Collie Association, and Working Canine Association of Canada. Beware of bogus registries that are not recognized by the Animal Pedigree Act.

If you are traveling to visit a breeder in the U.S, they should register their puppies with the American Kennel Club.

It is the breeder’s responsibility to forward the certificate within 6 months of the sale to the new owner; they are not allowed to charge an additional fee for this service. The certificate includes the dog’s registered name, breed and date of birth, as well as the names of the dog’s sire and dam.

4. Can I see where the puppies and dam(s) are being housed?

The best way to raise a puppy is in a home environment so it will get lots of handling and human contact.

Facilities should be clean and spacious.

5. Are The Puppies Raised In Your Home From Birth?

Puppies should be raised in the home from birth. They should be kept clean, warm, well fed, and with their mother until they are weaned.

6. Were the sire and dam screened for genetic disorders common to this breed?

Good breeders have all their breeding stock screened for relevant genetic disorders, and remove affected animals from their breeding programs. Affected animals are spayed/neutered and may be placed as companion animals as long as health issues are disclosed to buyers/adopters.

The breeder should include copies of the genetic screening results in the papers given to buyers.

7. What Were Your Goals For This Litter?

A good breeder has clear goals when selecting the sire and dam. If the goal is to produce working dogs and both the sire and dam are high drive dogs, it might not be the best choice for someone seeking a nice, calm companion. However, it would be perfect for someone looking for a hunting companion.

There will be a variety of temperaments in every litter and the breeder should speak knowledgeably about temperaments in her dogs and puppies. Good breeders will talk openly about their breeding program and breeding practices.

8. When do you start breeding a dam, and when is she retired?

The breeder should not be breeding dogs that are younger than 18 months, and should stop breeding them by middle age, which will vary depending on the breed.

They should stop breeding any female dog once it has delivered 3 to 4 litters if it's a large breed, or 5 to 6 litters if it's a small breed.

9. Is the dam current on her vaccines?

If the vaccines are not up to date, the puppies’ ability to resist disease will be compromised.

The breeder should include copies of vaccination certificates in the papers given to the buyer.

10. At what age will the puppies be ready to leave?

Puppies should not go to their new homes before 8 weeks old. Any earlier and they may have issues with other dogs in the future; any longer than 10 weeks and they may not bond as well with people.

11. Have the puppies been seen by a vet?

Puppies need to be dewormed and vaccinated before leaving the breeder. (You will also need to follow up with your own veterinarian so the puppy gets boosters at appropriate intervals and the risk of it contracting a life-threatening illness is lessened.

12. What kind of guarantee do you offer?

A good breeder will offer a detailed health guarantee that specifically addresses genetic disorders and offers more than just a replacement puppy.

Beware of a breeder that requires you to return the puppy in order to get a refund or replacement.

13. Will you be able to help me with care and training issues once I get my puppy home?

Good breeders want to stay in touch and help their puppy buyers with any health, training, or minor behavioural issues.

The breeder should also ask you questions to ensure your lifestyle, knowledge of dogs and attitude are a good fit for one of their puppies.

What A Responsible Breeder Looks Like

If you plan to buy a puppy from a breeder, you need to know how to recognize a responsible, caring breeding operation and – just as important – where to find them in your area.

If you don’t take the time to carefully choose where you get your puppy, you could end up with a dog that suffers from serious medical issues or behavioural problems, causing you a great deal of heartache, frustration and expense. Worse, you could end up unknowingly supporting the cruel puppy mill industry.

Internet classified sites are not the only place to look for a purebred dog. It is virtually impossible to tell the difference between a reputable breeder and a puppy mill unless you do an in person visit. Puppy mills and backyard breeders are known to use internet classifieds to promote their business and find potential customers. Reputable breeders rely on their own websites, word of mouth and their national or regional breed clubs for referrals even though they may advertise within the classifieds.

To find a reputable breeder, go to the national or regional breed club or your local kennel club. The breed club should have a code of ethics that members must meet in order to join. You can also find rescue dogs available through breed clubs.

Dog breeding is a big responsibility. Those who don’t have the knowledge, time, space, love and money to breed and care for dogs at a high standard should not be breeding. Unfortunately, many people do it anyway because they can make a lot of money in the breeding business. Good breeders put a great deal of time into caring for their dogs, researching and deciding which dogs to breed and screening potential buyers. They are very involved in their breed club, they participate in shows and other competitions and their dogs are a huge part of their lives.

They do all of this because they care – not to make money. Ethical dog breeders usually make, at most, a small profit from the sale of their puppies because most of the money their clients pay goes to cover expenses such as health screening for genetic disorders, stud fees, vet fees and registration.

The only way you can know for sure that a breeder is responsible and humane is to visit and see first-hand the conditions their breeding dogs and puppies are kept in. Be sure you visit before you hand over any money. You’ll need to ask specific questions and ask to see certain paperwork to make sure they meet the standards of a good breeder.

Below are the hallmarks of a good breeder.

A responsible, ethical breeder:

• Breeds dogs of only one or two breeds, and does not have a larger number of animals than they can reasonably provide with a good quality of life.

• Requires you to visit and will show you their dogs (including the mothers) and where they are housed.

• Has facilities that are clean and spacious and their dogs are healthy and well socialized.

• Keeps puppies clean, warm, well-fed and allows them to stay with their mother until they are weaned.

• Doesn’t allow puppies to go to new homes before 8 weeks of age.

• Raises their puppies in the home where they can become accustomed to household sounds, such as the phone, dishwasher, vacuum, people coming and going, etc.

• Is a member of their breed club and the national kennel club (in Canada, this is the Canadian Kennel Club (https://www.ckc.ca/en)), and adheres to their Code of Ethics. You can find the Canadian Kennel Club Code of Ethics here (https://www.ckc.ca/en/Landing Pages/Member-Code-Of-Ethics).

• Is very knowledgeable about the breed and asks you many questions to ensure your lifestyle, knowledge of dogs and attitude are a good fit for one of their puppies.

• Will talk openly about their breeding program and practices.

• Has working knowledge of genetics and will talk to you about genetic disorders prevalent in the breed and how they are working to prevent them.

• Screens all their breeding stock for relevant genetic disorders and removes affected animals from their breeding program. Affected animals are spayed/neutered and may be placed as companion animals as long as health issues are disclosed to buyers/adopters.

• Takes lifetime responsibility for their breeding dogs and the puppies they produce and will take back any animal of their breeding, at any time, for any reason.

• Does not breed animals younger than 18 months and stops breeding by middle age, which will vary depending on the breed.

• Stop breeding any female dog once it has delivered 3 to 4 litters if it’s a large breed, and 5-6 litters if it’s a small breed.

• Provides ongoing guidance and support to puppy buyers.

• Provides a contract that spells out the breeder’s obligations and the purchaser’s responsibilities, such as obedience classes, spay/neuter surgery and the general care of the puppy.

• Provides a guarantee of overall health and temperament, as well as absence of genetic disorders. The guarantee offers some financial reimbursement, not simply a replacement puppy.

• Provides puppy buyers with proper paperwork, including a bill of sale, Canadian Kennel Club registration papers, vaccination certificates and copies of genetic screening clearances for the sire and dam (father and mother) of the litter.

But they say they’re registered with the kennel club!

While breeders of purebreds should register their dogs with the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), doing this alone does not guarantee that they treat their dogs humanely or do any medical screening. All it means is that the registered puppy is the offspring of two dogs that are both also registered as being purebred of the breed in question.

Registration happens by mail, and the CKC does not monitor or inspect the breeding facilities of its members or of breeders who register their puppies with the club.

Here are a few red flags common to puppy mills, brokers, irresponsible breeders and scammers:

• Not requiring you to visit them and their dogs.

• Not asking you anything about your experience with dogs, your lifestyle, etc.

• Offering to ship or deliver the puppy to you or meet you in a public place to hand it over. They may initially talk about you coming to pick up the puppy but, at the last minute, they suggest saving you the trouble and just meeting you somewhere.

• Offering puppies of many different breeds.

• Requires you to send money to another country.

• If you do visit, they bring out the puppy to you so you don’t see the mother, litter mates or where the dogs live. Keep an eye out for barns and sheds on the property that could be used for mass-breeding dogs.

• Doesn’t know anything about typical genetic disorders for the breed and doesn’t have their dogs screened by veterinary specialists (including: hip x-rays, ophthalmologist, cardiologist, etc.).

• Provides no guarantee of the puppy’s health or only a guarantee that requires you to send the puppy back.

Commercial breeders

Commercial breeders are large-scale breeders that have anywhere from dozens to hundreds of dogs of various breeds for sale. They either sell directly to the public, via ads in newspaper and internet classified sections, or they may sell to pet stores. Some are actually puppy mills that simply call themselves commercial breeders so that it sounds better. Others may provide clean facilities and sufficient staff, but the volume of dogs they have makes it impossible to provide the loving care and attention that a reputable breeder could provide in their home.

Backyard Breeders

This term is used for people who either intentionally breed one or a few dogs but have very little knowledge, or who have an accidental litter because they hadn’t got around to spaying their female dog yet. They may seem harmless, but there are so many of them that they make a substantial contribution to Canada’s pet overpopulation crisis.

Chances are you know someone who’s a backyard breeder, though you’ve probably never thought of them in those terms.
